Harmful Makeup Ingredients - All you need to know!

You know what’s genuinely empowering? Knowing your sh*t. And we want to make sure you’re always an informed consumer who knows exactly what they’re looking for! Decoding INCI lists can be daunting but fear not, we’ve got a list of ingredients you definitely wanna keep an eye out for and, this time, NOT for their benefits sis.

Here’s are the top 4 harmful makeup ingredients :
  1. SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulpahte)
  2. Formaldehyde
  3. Parabens
  4. Synthetic Fragrances

Here’s more about each of them to help:

SLS - aka Sodium Laurel Sulphate ☠️

Here’s the tea babe, while the beauty community loves rambling on about how terrible sulphates can be, the one you really want to keep an eye out for is

Sodium Laurel Suphate NOT Sodium Laur-eth Sulphate. (SLES) She’s a lot more harsher as a surfactant (lathering qualities that sulphates possess- like that extra foamy shampoo you luurve that is probably doing more harm than good to your hair!) compared to SLES which means you’ve a lot more damage control to take care of! Lucky for you, none of our products contain any SLSs, so you’re free to go crazy and add all our lovely gushables worry-free to your cart!

Formaldehyde ☠️

Like, doesn’t the name alone sound like a big glaring red flag? And wary of it you should be! - Prolonged exposure to this carcinogen particularly in cosmetic products, can cause skin sensitisation + skin irritation.

Parabens ☠️

Parabens are widely used as preservatives in the beauty industry, however, prolonged and excessive usage of parabens have been known to disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity. Yikes!

Synthetic Fragrances ☠️

I know babe, this one hurts us too.

R.I.P all my fav scented skincare + makeup products. Farewell and goodness knows you’ll be missed and HOW.

But fragrance is 90% alcohol folks and we all know what too much alcohol does to the system, one too many night-outs can attest to that.

Jk buuuut, on a more real note, alcohol’s severely dehydrating properties are something you do NOT want to be transferring to your skin esp topically - say hello to premature aging and skin sensitisation and contact dermatitis. (severe skin rashes & allergies caused by an irritating ingredient)

Happy Gushing!!!
