We like to call the ingredients we use in our Gush products, our hero ingredients with superpowers so the ingredients we'll be discussing now I guess we could call the voldemort of ingredients! The big NO-NOs! And don't worry I didn't say the name out loud<3
It can be so daunting to figure out what’s right for you and your skin with so much different information being thrown at you!💖 We here at Gush want to make sure you’re always an informed consumer and you have the right information to make these decisions yourself! Here are some of the scariest ingredients in the beauty industry!
These are a group of preservatives and antimicrobial chemicals that actually prevent the growth of nasty things like bad bacteria in your beauty products. But here is the problem—Studies have confirmed that parabens mimic estrogen in the human body, with evidence linking them to reproductive organ harm, thyroid disruption, hormone-related cancers, and obesity. Exposure to parabens through beauty products was recently linked to early onset puberty in girls!
So Besties please look for products that are paraben-free!
FRAGRANCES AND PHTHALATES❌
The word fragrance most people look at positively! I mean, who would want to smell bad? However, for your skin, you must run away from fragrance as fast as you can! It is a catchall term that can disguise up to 3,000 synthetic or natural chemicals used to make a beauty product smell delicious. The problem here is that any fragrance has Phthalates! These help fragrances last longer!
You’ll find them on an ingredient list abbreviated as DEP, BBzP, DBP, and DEHP. These phthalates have been linked to reproductive and hormonal harm in children and men. Some studies have linked phthalate exposure to obesity, type 2 diabetes, reduced sperm count, breast cancers, reproductive malformation, infertility, and cardiovascular events! Some serious stuff huh?
TALC is a common ingredient in face powders and eye shadows, talc is a mineral made from magnesium, silicon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Talc that hasn’t been purified can be contaminated with asbestos, a known human carcinogen. Claire stores had to recall their shadow and contour palettes after the FDA found asbestos contamination! Even found in Johnson & Johnson baby products!
PEG (POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL)
This ingredient is widely used as a thickener and moisture-carrier in many skin care products. You might also find it in your cosmetics as a solvent or softener. The danger with this ingredient is that, depending on manufacturing processes, it could be contaminated and produce carcinogens! Most commonly found in: creams, sunscreen, shampoo. Scary right? Its ALL SO SCARY.
This is why it is important to shop from clean beauty brands but also important to be aware of the ingredients yourself! Gush products are cruelty-free, vegan & clean. Formulated with conscious ingredients! As our website says, we actually care more about what we formulate without! Our products do not include any of these ingredients because we care just as much as you! Here is the link to our previous blog post with more ingredients to avoid—
We hope this helps! Always check out the back of your products besties!
